Canova Houdon Thorvaldsen | Neoclassical
The Neoclassical art movement from the 18th and 19th century is associated with a renewed interest in ancient greek and roman times, grand tour travel to Italy and abroad, and the Age of Enlightenment. Several important artists in our collection were inspired by this age: Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822) for his myth sculptures and portraits of Napoleon, Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) for his portraits of the believers of democratic ideas, and Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) for his dedication to copying the ancient masters.
