Salvador Dali applies his unique surrealist mastery to this Portrait of Picasso which is composed of a variety of organic elements to form a composite study.  Dali interprets Picasso as an alien like form with a long silver spoon extending from a braided cerebral cortex and sagging chest.

At a younger age Dali and Picasso had had a supportive relationship. By 1947, Dali's opinion of Picasso had changed as seen in this less than flattering symbolic composite where Picasso's brain extends through his mouth lapping up inspiration. A lute appears in the spoon as a symbol of a lover. Dali felt Picasso had pushed modern art astray much like the oppressive rock on the head.
