For 10 years, Degas sketched the young women ballerinas of Paris training in the ballet and then reused the sketches for new artworks during the next 40 years. In his attempt to catch the action of the moment, his ballet dancers and female nudes are in poses that make no attempt to conceal their physical exertions.

In this example, a weary young girl rests as she waits with her stage mother for the next rehearsal or audition. She grabs towards her weary ankle. We are taken into the real world of a dancer's life.

She is not a star dancer...just one in the chorus waiting her next advancement.
