About the Roman Denarius:
The Roman denarius was a silver coin first minted around 211 BCE during the Roman Republic and became one of the most significant currencies in ancient Rome. Initially, it weighed approximately 4.5 grams and was divided into 10 original "assi," making it a valuable medium of exchange. Over time, the denarius underwent various changes in weight and silver content, particularly during periods of economic strain, including the Punic Wars and later during the crisis of the third century CE. As Rome transitioned from a Republic to an Empire, the denarius continued to play a crucial role in trade, military payments, and taxation. Its influence extended beyond Rome, affecting the economies of conquered territories throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. Although eventually replaced by the solidus and other currencies, the denarius left a lasting legacy, giving its name to various modern coins and serving as a symbol of antiquity’s monetary systems.
