Sandro Botticelli was born in Florence. His work marks the transition between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He was part of the Florentine school whose patron was Lorenzo de Medici. A hundred years later, Vasari would refer to this school as the Golden Age of painting. In 1481 and 1482, Botticelli spent a brief time in Rome where he painted a number of frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. He works are characterized by an elegant, lyrical wealth of color, conspicuous delineation and a triumphant style.
