On the left of the central panel of the religious triptych painting Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch (ca 1450 - 1516), an unsuspecting man is seduced by a black woman. In the Middle Ages, Negroes were viewed as evil. The sin takes place on a duck, the symbol of stupidity and alcoholism, and is observed by a large, colorful kingfisher. Bosch's religious painting today is beloved by fantasy and mystical believers who view Bosch as one of the forerunners to Surrealism.
